Dr. Pietro Memmo’s Visit to Bologna: Bridging Global Healthcare through Collaboration

Dr. Pietro Memmo, President of Orthopedic Associates of Hartford (OAH) and a noted physiatrist, recently returned to Bologna, Italy to deliver a lecture on the U.S. healthcare system to the Accademia Dei Semplici at the historic Circolo Ufficiale, originally constructed as the Palazzo Grassi in the 13th century. His audience included 80 healthcare professionals, physicians, and orthopedists.

In his presentation, Dr. Memmo discussed the intricacies of the American healthcare system, including private insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). His visit also included meetings with the Director General of the Servizio Sanitario Regionale Emilia-Romagna and the Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli, along with several board members of the regional health system and many orthopedists from Rizzoli.

The primary objective of Dr. Memmo’s visit was to foster collaboration between different healthcare systems to enhance global patient care. Discussions included potential future collaborations between OAH, the Bone & Joint Institute, and the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute, focusing on research and shared Patient Reported Outcomes metrics.

Dr. Memmo’s personal connection to Italy adds a poignant layer to his professional journey. Having lived in Italy at the age of 10, he has vivid memories of his mother undergoing a life-saving surgery in Bologna. This experience deeply ingrained in him a sense of gratitude and attachment to the region. Returning as a physician to discuss orthopedics and the economics of the U.S. healthcare system was particularly meaningful to him.

During his visit, Dr. Memmo highlighted the advanced data collection and reporting practices at OAH, including metrics on surgical site infections, length of stay, and readmission rates. He emphasized the differences in healthcare practices and infrastructure between the U.S. and Italy, noting the innovative approaches in the U.S., such as the shift from inpatient to outpatient surgeries.

Dr. Memmo’s lecture and interactions underscored the importance of global collaboration in healthcare, aiming to learn from different systems to improve patient outcomes worldwide. His trip reflects a significant step towards building international partnerships in orthopedic research and care, demonstrating the value of sharing knowledge and experiences across borders.
