Biography

Heeren Makanji, MD is an orthopedic spine surgeon who specializes in the operative and non-operative treatment of spinal disorders.  His expertise and clinical interests include complex cervical and lumbar reconstruction and minimally invasive, robotic navigation-assisted spine surgery. He has experience treating degenerative conditions as well as tumors, trauma, and infections.

Dr. Makanji received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees as an Honors and University Scholar from the University of Connecticut, graduating Summa cum Laude. Further, he attended Harvard Medical School, graduating with similar honors. Residency did not take him far, as he went to the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Young Women’s Hospital/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he was appointed chief resident. He received fellowship training in Orthopedic Spine Surgery at the Rothman Institute and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where he was a clinical instructor in orthopaedic surgery.

Dr. Makanji currently sits on the editorial board for Clinical Spine Surgery, a peer reviewed publication, and is an author and reviewer for Orthobullets, an online platform used by thousands of residents and attending physicians for orthopaedic content and training.
