Nicholas J. Bellas, MD

Biography
Dr. Nicholas Bellas is an orthopedic trauma surgeon specializing in the treatment of fractures, complex musculoskeletal injuries and post-traumatic conditions. A native of Old Lyme, Connecticut, he earned his undergraduate degree from Trinity College, graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society for academic excellence.
He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Connecticut. He then pursued a fellowship in Orthopedic Trauma at Denver Health, one of the nation’s leading trauma centers, where he received advanced training in the treatment of pelvic and acetabular injuries, fracture nonunions and malunions, and other traumatic musculoskeletal injuries.
Dr. Bellas has expertise in treating pelvic and acetabular fractures, fragility fractures, periprosthetic fractures and other traumatic orthopedic injuries using both traditional and minimally invasive surgical techniques. He believes every patient deserves a treatment plan tailored to their unique injury and recovery goals. Through clear communication and evidence-based care, he helps restore function, relieve pain and return them to the activities they enjoy.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Bellas has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and received several academic honors recognizing his commitment to advancing orthopedic care. His work has focused on orthopedic trauma, hip and knee arthroplasty, foot and ankle surgery, and sports medicine, and he has presented his work at regional and national meetings.
He also remains actively involved in resident education at UConn, where he regularly lectures and mentors trainees, and plans to continue in this teaching role over the long term.
Dr. Bellas is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In his free time, he enjoys golfing, skiing and spending time with his wife, family and friends.
